The best chocolate in London

is to be found at Melt a new shop on Ledbury Road.

There was an article about it in the observer food magazine - we went there today and omg it was full of customers in throes of orgasm

The guy who runs the shop and makes the choc works at the back of the shop and he's really friendly (and so sweet - he had chocolate all around his chops!). He gave us a few free tastings - the choc made with fresh mint is amazing.

Also he does thick, rich, not-too-sweet hot chocolate. Heaven.

GO THERE!

Where is Ledbury Road?

I like Montezuma, who have a shop in Spitalfields. And Roccocco (sp?)

hoxtonchick · 11/03/2006 20:26

i'm a montezuma fan too nqc - they're doing a loyalty card now....

spacedonkey · 11/03/2006 20:46

it's just off Westbourne Grove

I lied, the article was in the Independent Review Food and Drink bit last weekend. Apparently he's the only bloke in the world making chocs with water rather than cream. So they're intensely chocolatey, but not cloying.

The jasmine tea truffles are GORGEOUS

Out of interest does that mean his chocs are dairy free?

spacedonkey · 12/03/2006 10:46

Not all of them are dairy free - some of them are milk chocolate (didn't try those as I only like dark chocolate), but his dark chocolates are. According to the article in the Indy, he eats 400g of choc a day Shock and he's thin

Grin

there is a recipe for his fresh mint truffles on the Indy website, so you could try making them at home

they're unlike any mint choc i've ever tasted - so clean and fresh tasting ...

I think this thread is a bad influence. We went to Montezuma today, and to the strange little ice cream truck on Brick Lane. Very nice brownies, lovely chocolate milk.

spacedonkey · 12/03/2006 16:40

You're right - I now feel it is my duty to try Montezuma out for purposes of comparison Grin

If you go on a Sunday, go check out the funny little ice cream truck, that just does chocolate things, on Brick Lane.

spacedonkey · 12/03/2006 21:56

Will do! Thanks NQC Smile

Does Montezuma do thick dark hot chocolate?

DP excelled himself on Valentines day by introducing me to Montezuma. Best dark choc I have ever tasted, much better than G&B. They have a fab range in the leaflet. All fairtrade, too.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/03/2006 17:04

The chocolate truck on Brick Lane does lovely hot chocolate. Montezuma really just does bits of chocolate and fudge, no hot stuff.

jennifersofia · 13/03/2006 21:05

Which end of the Lane, NQC? Is it generally near the top, sort of in between Cheshire street and the bagel shop?
I have to say I disagree about Montezuma - I think choc from l'Artisan du Chocolate in South Kensington is much better.
Also, if you are near Montezuma in Spitalfields, you might as well stop by the shop on the other side of the street (next to A.Gold) that sells Pierre Marcolini chocolate. For reasons of scientific comparison only you do understand..

NotQuiteCockney · 13/03/2006 21:07

Oh, I bought some of that the other day, jennifersofia, for DH's birthday.

The truck was north from the giant market stall place, right next to that big bar complex - 92 east or something? Do you know where I mean? South of the bridge over the railway, but not by much. On the east side.

Milliways · 13/03/2006 21:10

I have just been given 2 bars of Montezuma choc. One has geranium in it? Don't know if I fancy it really!

NotQuiteCockney · 13/03/2006 21:14

Their white chocolate bar with ginger and chilli is great.

But I'm really coming around to the idea of sweet stuff with chilli in it, lately.

hoxtonchick · 13/03/2006 21:14

is it orange & geranium, milliways? bloody delicious!

jennifersofia · 13/03/2006 21:15

Oh, right, it must be new. Will check it out - thanks for that NQC. How did you rate the Marcolini choc?
