Kindle battery /charging problems

Hi,

Apologies if this has already been covered but I think that my Kindle is slightly buggered. It needs a full (24 hour) charge every week even if I haven't used it much. I only switch 3G WiFi on when I want to buy books because I'm terrified that the wretched thing will stop working altogether.

It's particularly poor when i have bought new books, irrespective of wether I read them.

Perhaps I'm not shutting it down correctly? It has a light that I use loads due to poor eyesight (ruined me eyes reading) It's about 15 /18 months old I think. There is a small crack in the black casing due to Ds throwing it across room but that shouldn't affect the charge?

Any suggestions?

I suspect it's the use of the light, which will be drawing from the Kindle battery. Try it without the light (i mean by using a bedside light instead, not reading in the dark!) and see whether that makes a difference.

I'd also let it discharge the battery completely and then charge it again.

I've done a bit of Googling and I think when you get a new book it's indexing it, which can take a lot of power. Out of interest, how many books are you storing on the device?

Some discussion here.

Ta tribpot,

That's good advice. I have 75 + books on the kindle, which doesn't seem like v. many to me. I have a Kindle because house may cave in due to quantity of books : )

Thank you for linking to the discussion, I'll have to read it later because I need to go out now.

cool nn -tribpot.

75+ doesn't seem that many, it should have room for a lot more.

I started a thread about this a few weeks ago as my 18month old one doesn't last all that long now compared to when it was new. I haven't resolved it as such, but I only normally read mine in bed, so I have bought an extension lead and now keep the charger by the bed so I can read with it plugged in if necessary and then leave it charging overnight, which I do about once a week. In my case I think it is because I leave the Wifi on all the time (I read fairly equally between the Kindle and my Iphone, so I need them to be permanently syncing). I hardly ever use the light in the cover. My only real fear is going on holiday and forgetting the charger!
