What do the results of these test actually mean ?

I was in hospital last week for hyperemesis gravidarum (excessive vomitting in pregnancy) and resulting dehydration and they told me that my urine test showed ketones +++ (or plus 3).

I have no idea whether they were measuring my dehydration state or starvation state.

Can anyone help as I was thinking of getting some of these sticks to test my urine like I wanted my GP/Midwife to do weeks ago but they said I would just know when it was time to be hospitalised as I would be "feeling really unwell".

ketones in your urine is not generally thought to be a good thing, afaik.

No it's pretty bad. My diabetic son has to test for keytones if he has a high blood sugar reading. It means your body isn't using the available energy as it should but burning up stuff it shouldn't need to burn if you're healthy. Normally you'd feel pretty ill with 3 keytones. The state is called keytoacidosis.
