Leapster for a 3 year old

I am considering buying a leapster for DD's third birthday in March. But, not sure if she is too young for it. Has anyone bought one? Did your child take to it? What is a good age range to expect for them to be interested in it?

Or, if you think a different preduct would be more suitable, please feel free to suggest. I'd like someting that is educational.

My ds was given a Leappad at about that age and took to it immediately, he's now 5 and still enjoys it immensely as we've got him older books to play. He still quite likes some of the younger books though. Dd is 3 and she's taking to it too, though not as much as ds did.

I don't know what the Leapster is, but if it's the younger version of the Leapad then you might want to consider going straight for the Leappad - depending on how curious your dd is.

It's not a leappad. It is different. You can google it, as I have just done, which brings me me to another question. Does any one know what the LeapsterL-Max Lerning system is? Is this the new leapster? Or something else?

DD has a Leapster but she got it for her 4th birthday, showed an interest in someone elses so we bought her one. She didn't like the Leappad any time I encouraged her to have a go but she loves this. I think they're aimed at 4 & up but if your DD is very bright it might suit her. DD is playing games for 5 & up so it all depends on the child I suppose.
L-Max is for older children about 8 I think. Shop around though they vary in price immensely. Asda has the Leapster for about £58 just now but we paid £52 in ELC when they had a 20% off weekend in November. I think it's quite good & if it doesn't get bashed about should do her for a few years.

We bought one for DD when she was 5 (christmas before last) and she loved it although DS plays with it more that her now and he has just turned 4 - he has been addicted to it for months! I think they are good - depends on the games you buy for it as some are more educational than others! They are fairly robust, ours has been dropped many times. Not sure if a 3 year old would take to it quickly or not really - depends on the child I guess. DS got into it by watching his sister play it a lot. Great on long car journeys, flights etc. Can you find a toy store (toysrus or elc) that has demo ones that she could try out?

Got one for DS's 4th birthday. He likes it but not as much as Playstation!

It is great when travelling though.

TBH I would imagine 3 is just a bit too young.

That was a really useful site. Thanks, Enid.

Any more opinions? Has anyone got the L-Max?

whtas hte diff wiht this and a game boy?

uwila · 27/02/2006 11:05

Hi Cod. I think it's more educational... but I'm not sure. Don't know much about Game Boy. I think your DS3 is exactly the same age as DD. What are you getting for his birthday? And how's the eye patch going?

DS1(4)and DS2(2) both have leapsters. We got the first when ds1 was 3 and he took to it straight away. Great for car journeys. There are plenty of games that they can play - even the younger one plays for ages.
