Kindle just arrived for DS's birthday present

I've plugged it in to charge and i'd like to buy him a few books to have on there for when we give it to him.
I bought the Kindle from Amazon and i'll buy the first few books from Amazon too so that should make it easier huh? DO I just plug it in to my MAC and the rest i will be prompted for?

I dont need the kindle connected to the computer to get books - you register the kindle to your amazon account and then order books that are then delivered to the kindle by 'whispernet'. There should be a user guide on the kindle itself or you can access it on the amazon website
