Theres a long story behind me wanting this chair. I work hard and have been saving the money for a while and now that it comes to the crunch I'm feeling guilty at the thought of how many nappies/clothes and toys I could buy the dc with that money!

My childhood was bleak and there was no money for any luxuries (food was considered a luxury even)which perhaps makes me want this even more it would be a constant reminder of how far we have come!

I've always dreamt of having something that would be an heirloom for me to hand down and I had my heart set on this. The chair really is not to everyones taste so thought it best not to post a link to it here

cheaper ones won't work

i mean, you'll be able to sit on them, but you'll still hanker for it

dh is also obsessed with this chair.

zippitippitoes · 23/02/2006 15:38

what's the rest of your home like

it is highly aspirational so do you have limsetone flors etc

farTooAshamedToAdmitMyName · 23/02/2006 15:42

ZTT, it's quite shabby really, less of the chic.

It is generally regarded as a design classic. And it will definitely be an heirloom (of sorts) for your children.
Have you actually gone and sat in it?
Does it fit the dimensions of your home?
If so then go for it!
£2000 does seem a lot for one chair but when you compare it to a suite from somewhere like Multiyork I know which I'd rather have and which would last longest.
(the chair, btw!)

CountessDracula · 23/02/2006 15:42

A mate of mine has one of these it is so uncomfortable as you can only sit leaning back with your legs halfway off the ground (well you can if you are stumpy legged like me)

I wouldn't get it but if it is what floats your boat then go for it. Would you have it in the bedroom/a child free room? I only ask as if not it will cause unbearable stress if you really have saved this long for it and someone decides to play noughts and crosses on it...

WeepingRicotta · 23/02/2006 15:43

They're very like ones we have at work. Not comfy IMO.

farTooAshamedToAdmitMyName · 23/02/2006 15:45

Yes I have sat in one, agree CD it's not high in the comfort stakes unless you sit right in it with a cushion or two.

you pay over £1000 for a leather chair at Multiyork and they're not as nice.

desperatehousewife · 23/02/2006 15:46

definatley buy it. It's beautiful, has a hilarious name and it IS a design classic. Every home should have one beautiful and ludicrously expensive object.

prettybird · 23/02/2006 15:46

My dh would love it - and I can see the attraction to. It is a modern a classic, so would be suitable as an heiloom.

Are yuo going to be getting it in leather?

It looks like a great "snuggle in to and read a book" chair.

If you've saved for it and have wanted it for so long, I don't see why you shouldn't go for it if you now have the money for it. Just becasue you have kids, doesn't mean that you shouldn't also treat yourself.

I mean, it's not as if your kids are going to go without nappies, does it?! And I bet they already have loads of toys: do they really need any more?

Go on, go on, go on, go on.

zippitippitoes · 23/02/2006 15:46

uncomfortable design classics are really for the idle rich

farTooAshamedToAdmitMyName · 23/02/2006 15:48

That's me out then.

If you have the money sitting there and you won't actually deprive yourself of anything important then you should buy it! I frittered away £1000 of inheritance on clothes for me and toys and things for the children. Wish now I'd spent it on one special thing that would last forever.

WideWebWitch · 23/02/2006 15:49

Ooh, did the school run and 56 posts re chair! I like it but agree, only get it if you can bear to see children climbing on it. lol at krabbiepattys warnings! Is £2k a lot of money to you? If it's less than a months salary then get it. And 6 years is a looong time to want sometihng!

gegs73 · 23/02/2006 15:49

I love it. Buy buy

zippitippitoes · 23/02/2006 15:51

it will be more comfortable once the children have bounced on it enough to soften it up

prettybird · 23/02/2006 16:03

Is it really unfcomfrotable? Are you sure you couldn't find another design classic that is more comfortabel? Is it more comfortable once you have loaded with cushions? Or wouldn't you do that becaseu it might spoil its claiss looks?

Still say that if you have covetted it for this long, knowing its limitations, then you should go for it.

fairyfly · 23/02/2006 16:04

You can't buy a chair called ball Sack

CountessDracula · 23/02/2006 16:05

how old are your kids?

zippitippitoes · 23/02/2006 16:10

if they are girls over the age of 6 then buy it!

stitch · 23/02/2006 16:45

im sorry, but i cant think of a worse thinng than wasting my hard earned money on something like this.
but if you like it.....

rummum · 23/02/2006 16:49

I don't think it looks very comfy...
now if it reclined and was more padded I'd say think about it...
if it vibrated as well I'd say buy it

reggiemolly · 23/02/2006 18:05

I think it is lovely. but it doesn't matter whether or not anybody else likes it. it's your taste and you want it and I think you should buy it.

zippitippitoes · 23/02/2006 18:07

I've been trying to find that photo of peter mandelson in it to put you off but no luck

FarTooAshamedToAdmitMyName · 23/02/2006 20:09

Kids are both under 5!

I think PM sitting in it might put me off. Only kidding. The chair would go in my bedroom so it shouldn't get too trashed but after all it isn't an ornament and a few dings and scrapes would add to the character. (I would probably have it wrapped in cling film for the first 3 or 4 years)

Stitch I can see your point, I guess some of us would buy diamonds or a designer bag but it would actually mean quite alot to me to have this.

I really thought I would get ridculed on this thread and am quite surprised at the posts if I am honest, hence the shameless name change
