I've finally made the brave decision to get an e reader, will I love it? Who knows!

Anyway, any recommendations for me as to which one. Obvious choice was the new kindle but I've been reading about the kobo and I'm confused, it's so difficult not being able to test them!

I would highly recommend a Sony E-reader (PRST-1 or PRS150). It's far more flexible than the Kindle given that it takes the E-pub format of books which means you can buy your books anywhere or in fact get a huge amount of books free.
Which? this month are doing Ebooks review and Sony is highly rated. We have 3 in this family and they are faultless ... I only have to charge it every few months, it is easy to hold and it is touchscreen. I would however recommend getting a leather case for it that folds backwards, that makes it far far easier to hold and it means you can stand it up if you were lying on the beach or whatever..

Kindle. Easiest to purchase books with, generous replacement policy if you break it, probably the best selection of books available.

Don't get a Kobo. I had an early one and it was very, very slow at turning pages. It froze after a few months and I had a terrible time dealing with their customer services. I called them several times and they were supposed to send me a replacement and a box for me to return mine. It never arrived. I eventually took it back to the chain OH had bought it from and they very kindly gave me a full refund.

I had a problem with my kindle cover and it was replaced in days. I love my kindle.

Ahhhh but Kindle doesn't support the e-pub format which means you are tied to Amazon as opposed the very many online bookstores, and more importantly you can't get the 000's of free books out there...
Everyone to their own of course.. it suits us Smile

Yes do agree SecretS that once you have one sort of Ereader in your family, you are converted!
I don't know anything about Kobo. I actually think that the mechanics of the different types of Ereaders are much the same and it all depends on where you want to get your books and how. I'm sure you are right SecretS about being able to covert books into the right format... I am just quoting my OH parrot fashion and he does talk a load of bollocks at times Grin

Get a kindle as it is the best hardware and download Calibre (free) for your PC so that you can convert any format of ebook (including e-pub and library ebooks) to kindle.

Then get a leather cover with an integrated light for your kindle and it will become The Precious.

The normal Kindle is fine. I would also say that unless you really expect to download books anywhere then you don't need the 3G.

If you go into John Lewis you should be able to try one. I played around with one in there at Christmas for 10 minutes and was converted.

pigsinmud · 07/06/2012 13:27

Well I chose the touch one over the standard one. It was simply because I preferred to touch the screen to turn a page, rather than pushing a button. Also, preferred to type on screen rather than use the scrolling buttons on standard one.

i got keyboard kindle 3g and i'm in lust.

DamnDeDoubtance · 07/06/2012 20:28

Kindle is the easiest on the eyes methinks.
