like here Can anybody explain it to me? We have one and it's great for getting garlic and chilli off which will not be beaten by soap.

strange question, I know, but it's been bugging me!

Do they really work then? I've seen these and often wondered if or how that can be.

I rub my hands on the mixer tap if I've been cooking with garlic. It's just stainless steel so it does the same thing!

odours are sulphur containing compounds.
Sulphur binds to the metal instead of your hands.

It is quite a complex mechanism, but this is the easiest way to explain it.

Thank you Gingerbear.

You sound a bright scientific type..am now filing your name away in my memory bank for the next load of science homework we get that I inevitably won't be able to answer

...and if you don't have stainless steel taps, use a teaspoon.

Really.

Kelly1978 · 21/02/2006 10:45

Thanks gingerbear, now I know. I can remember a teeny bit of a level chemistry so I think i know what you are getting at. i dropped it after three months, waay over my head!

Oh, please don't tell me I am an expert! Martianbishop is your gal - she has an 'ology' you know. {grin]

I wear latex gloves to chop garlic and chili

Somebody beat me to it i was going to suggest the tap or a tea spoon, it does work. Spoon is best because you can do it under running water which has the best effect.
