Kindle or tablet computer?

Please help. I am not very clued up about this. It is my birthday soon and I said to DH that I might like a Kindle as I love reading. However, DH has suggested I might get a tablet computer (lower end of the market as can't stretch to an Ipad). I would mainly want it for e-reading, but are there fantastic functions on a tablet that I could be missing out on?
Would love to hear of any recommendations/ your experience with either.

I bought an iPad about 2 years ago, have the kindle app on it and used it for reading, surfing, listening to music. About a year ago I bought a kindle because iPad is backlit, as are all tablets, so it's rubbish in very bright light - no reading in the garden. It also strains your eyes more so if you really want the device for reading I'd go with a kindle for now and save up for a tablet for later if you want the rest of the functionality. The kindle fire which isn't in the UK yet (I think ) is also a tablet and backlit but you would be able to read books in colour. Backlighting will also drain a battery more quickly.

Thanks for replying. I also like that the kindle is so slim and light. Your suggestion of getting the kindle now and saving for a good tablet sounds v sensible.

hmmm I am in the middle of a similar dilema!
I have recently discovered the kindle app on my smartphone and am loving it! I have finally got back into reading (6 children sort of killed my reading habit for a while!)
Was thinking of getting a kindle for my bday....but tried DHs and wasnt really over fussed tbh. I hardly ever read in the garden/sunlight(what's sun anyway????) and mostly read in bed, in which instance the backlight is an advantage...
so then was thinking about a cheaper tablet, as I would definitely use other stuff on a tablet (surfing, calandar, iplayer etc)
but then again if I love my phone then maybe I just dont need any more gadgets LOL
Did you decide yet heidigirl ?
