considering one of these two extremes for dgs 2nd birthday, any ideas which would be the better buy...

Alternatively I'm thinking of a sand pit or a sand and water table so ditto which you think is better

I don't know if he will have a garden or not

I might be missing something, but apart from the canopy is there a huge difference.

DD loves her trike to bits and we use it so much now. If I don't need to carry much or just need something small I also take her to the shops in it.

Whatever type you go for they really are great and make a change from a pushchair

this is it without the canopy, I think the main difference is the more pushchair like handle

the handle is certianly a lot wider and like you say more like a pushchair.

I personally don't have a problem with the baby driver handle as its a lot sturdier than others I tried at the time.

I would suggest having a look for one in a shop to give it a test.
