gas or electric - quick survey

found a cooker I want for my new house (if I ever move - another story) its stunning issue is all electric version is £400.00 cheaper.

So, quick survey, what do you prefer Gas or Electric hob? (will choose electric oven)

and is the gas worth the £400 difference ?

Prefer gas as like the control althouh some of the new halogen and induction hobs are supposed to be really good and easy to wipe over. £400 is a big difference though.

MummyJules · 11/02/2006 17:55

If I could afford it I would always go for Gas!

JonesTheSteam · 11/02/2006 17:56

Prefer gas (but with you on the electric oven)

I always preferred gas but now I want an electric induction hob - they are supposedly almost as 'instant' as gas in their response and economical to run. They are expensive to buy but my excuse is that gas prices seem to be going through the roof.

The £400 difference is between gas and a plate hob not ceremic hob which look more streamline and smart - not sure how much they are. Its a freestanding cooker with a glass lid so effectively all hobs and rings will be hidden when not in use. So will look smart whatever.

I have never used electric hobs before, but obviously the price is more attractive. I would hate to buy electric and regret it though. hmmmmm

Would not have a basic solid plate electric hob again - nightmare to control the heat and used to get lots of spills which smelt if you continued to cook and were pain to clean off.

CarolinaMoon · 11/02/2006 18:18

plate hobs are a nightmare - they take sooooo long to heat up and then even longer to cool down. Even ceramic hobs are v slow compared with gas. I would go for gas every time - if the oven is electric, you prob won't use enough gas for the fuel cost to make much difference.

alexsmum · 11/02/2006 18:31

another vote for gas here.we have a gas hob /electric fan oven combo here and its great.

CoolTurkey · 11/02/2006 18:48

Has anyone used an induction hob? I would like to know if they are all they are cracked up to be. They sound as good as gas, not slow like other electric hobs.

I know I'll need some new pans as I only have 2 'magnetic' ones but that's fine by me.

golds · 11/02/2006 19:07

arrhhh confirming what I thought, gas is best, its better to pay the extra I think - thanks

I like gas hob, and prefer a gas oven but now have a gas hob with electric oven due to house move and won't be changing it

CoolTurkey · 11/02/2006 19:22

Experience of induction hobs? I'll take that as a no then.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but am interested in them as they are also supposed to be safer - the pan is heated but not the plate.

Passionflower · 11/02/2006 20:07

Gas hobs are a pig to clean though.

gingernut · 11/02/2006 20:40

Gas. I've used my Mum's fairly modern electric hob (not sure what type, but it is flat and the rings glow red) which is supposed to be quicker than the old type but still find it a pain.

colditz · 11/02/2006 20:43

Prefer gas.

Not worth £400 difference though, not to me!
