DD has one of these beds - it just sounds like a freak accident to me but is it worth risking keeping it?

Oh, that poor family. How terrible. Yes, I'd get rid even if it was a freak accident.

ikea have withdrawn the bed. I wouldn't get rid of the bed as it could happened in a cot. It was a freak accident.

CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 11:31

dd is 3.5 so I guess she should be ok but I still have this nagging feeling...

I wouldnt be able to sleep at night even though it sounds like a tragic accident
very

brimfull · 09/02/2006 12:03

surely this sort of accident could happen with any metal framed bed similar to this one,or am I missing something. My teen dd has a bed similar, should I worry that ds may go into her room and hang himself now?!

agree that you should change the bed for peace of mind.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 09/02/2006 12:32

My ds2 (22 months) has a bed the same as that in blue although its not got swirly bits and it not from ikea. We cant afford a new one but i wont sleep properly if i dont change it. SO we are taking at apart and hes going to just use the mattress whilst we save up. He usually ends up on the floor anyway so at least he wont have as far to fall!

tassis · 09/02/2006 16:48

that's just so tragic.

there was a next kid's metal bed that we considered buying for ds and it said not for under 8s or something.

we so nearly bought it anyway.

it was to do with how far apart the rails were.

My ongoing convo with the Ikea online help a la msn....

Hi, thanks for contacting IKEA my name is Ella how can I help?
16:45 Hi, I have a Minnen bed which I gather has been withdrawn for safety reasons. Can I bring it back?
16:48 hello?
16:47 The bed has been removed for a mark of respect there isn't actually a fault with the bed. However you can return the bed but the same returns policy does apply.
16:53 sorry?
16:53 What is the returns policy?
16:53 I don't have the receipt any more
16:54 And the bed has been used
16:53 If you have a change of mind simply return any unused items in their original packaging within 90 days, with your till receipt, for a full refund. Products not in their packaging are subject to a 30% refund reduction. Our 90 day returns policy does not apply to mattresses (unless unused and in their original packaging), cut fabric, bargain corner purchases, or goods ordered to your specification, e.g. custom made worktops or made to order sofa's. Items ordered in store, to be delivered directly to your home at a later date, can only be cancelled within 48 hours from the date the ordered was placed. After this a handling fee of 20% will be charged. This is in addition to your statutory rights.
16:59 I think it is more than 90 days and have no receipt
16:59 So you are telling me I just have to chuck it out
16:59 Thanks a bunch!
16:59 I do apologise however as there is no fault with the bed there is nothing we can do.
17:03 So you can guarantee that the bed is safe and suitable for a 3 year old?

CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 17:04

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 17:04

17:03 Yes Ikea can guarntee that the bed is safe.

OP posts:
Enid · 09/02/2006 17:05

Enid · 09/02/2006 17:05

has it passed euro saftely standards?

CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 17:06

she said

The bed has been removed for a mark of respect there isn't actually a fault with the bed

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 17:06

I guess so or they wouldn't sell it

OP posts:
Enid · 09/02/2006 17:07

oh just chuck it

it only cost £50

go to your local pine shop and buy a nice wooden one instead

LIZS · 09/02/2006 17:07

Agree it was a freak accident and the child was probably younger, and therefore smaller, than most in such a bed. Ikea have withdrawn it from sale and if it is shown to be, even remotely, a design flaw then they will recall it but it does sound like a freak accident just as you hear of the occasional bunk bed ones. We nearly bouguht a gold coloured one a year or two back when looking for a bed for dd. Not sure what I woudl do if we had but probably would, for the sake of £50, replace it.If you are in doubt speak to Trading Standards.

Blu · 09/02/2006 17:13

Jam it so tightly into the corner and up against the wall so that there isn't room to get any body part right through? And secure it in place with safety chains to the wall?

CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 17:21

oh I am not worried about the money, more that they have withdrawn something and I am concerned about safety. If they say it is safe then I guess it is but I still have that horrid feeling so will prob bin it

OP posts:
beckybrastraps · 09/02/2006 17:34

An absolutely terrible thing to happen. But how impressive that the mother is calling it a tragic accident, and not running to the lawyers. Rare these days.

CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 17:53

Yes, I thought that

It is obviously an accident but I still now have nagging feeling about metal bed...
