news story here Poor little thing

DD has one of these beds - it just sounds like a freak accident to me but is it worth risking keeping it?

bed here for those not sure if they have one

Def sounds liek freak accident, very . I'm not sure I would keep it though.

misdee · 09/02/2006 09:22

poor baby.

her body went through the rails but her head didnt?

fastasleep · 09/02/2006 09:23

I think after reading it that that could happen in any bed not pressed securely against a wall.... what a horrible accident!

fastasleep · 09/02/2006 09:25

I think she slid down the wall side gap iyswim and under the rails horizontally her body fitted through the space but her head got stuck

CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 09:31

No I think it is because the bed has the railings - she put her feet through them and then her head got caught on the top rail

not sure but think I may get rid of it

How sad. That poor family.

Tbh, it was just a freak accident - and would probably never happen again. But I think every time you look at your dd's bed now you will think of that poor child (and when your dd sleeps in in the morning you will have a moment's pause before you go in to check on her) and for that - totally illogical - reason I would get rid of the bed.

nitfreecod · 09/02/2006 09:39

bin the bed

nitfreecod · 09/02/2006 09:40

i must admit thoguh i am suprised they ever designed sucha stwirly bed for kids
you always hear about belts and kids nad beds

Kidstrack2 · 09/02/2006 09:49

Tragic accident, poor family, I love the ikea beds but I didn't like the metal one incase dd banged herself on it.

NomDePlume · 09/02/2006 09:59

Really tragic accident. I'd get rid of the bed though, for my own piece of mind.

DD has a metal bed, which she has been in since she was 2, thankfully now, at 3.5, she is too big to fit between the railings at all (apart from slotting her legs through), so I'm not worried about her having a similarly terrible accident.

BudaBabe · 09/02/2006 10:00

Isn't there a "safe" distance between bards of cots etc?

Surely that should apply to beds marketed as children's beds.

How terribly sad.

Must admit I would get rid of it if had it. Would be very uncomfortable re safety.

JanH · 09/02/2006 10:02

I still can't work out exactly what she did - the bars don't look far enough apart for a whole child to slip between 2 of them - but yes, I would get rid.

CountessDracula · 09/02/2006 10:03

N de P dd can't ger her head between the bars either but that is not what happened

She put her LEGS through the bars, slipped and caught her neck on the horizontal bar at the top, cutting off her airway. As her legs were dangling through the bars she effectively hanged. I can see how it could happen now I have read about it and will be getting rid of the bed.

How old is your dd CD? Around 21 months? If so, I would get rid of it, or keep it for later but find another bed for dd to sleep in. If she is older, I wouldn't worry too much.

What a terribly sad story and what a very brave and sensible mother not to go mad with Ikea.

NomDePlume · 09/02/2006 10:18

Ah, right. I still can't picture the accident itself though, I don't understand how her head got stuck on the bar and didn't 'snap' back with the force of her legs slipping, IYSWIM. Poor family

oliveoil · 09/02/2006 10:19

I would get rid of the bed.

I would spend every night peeping in the room to check and worry and not relax.

Horrible story, couldn't read most of it.

foxinsocks · 09/02/2006 10:21

oh I see - we don't have that bed but have the similar one that has the sort of railings all down one side and at both ends (think it's called day bed or something)

Am amazed a child could fit both legs and hips through those bars - but guess she could be a small 21 month old

Sherbert37 · 09/02/2006 10:43

Might be worth contacting Ikea as they may refund you?

Lilliput · 09/02/2006 11:00

My daughter has that bed and I have no intention of getting rid of it. I think 21 months is too young to be in a big girls bed anyway as kids still move around so much in their sleep. My dd is now three and she stays put and snuggles down to sleep. I think this was a one off freak accident and unless your child is small or under 2 it is a bit reactionary to get rid of the bed if you already have one.

Nbg · 09/02/2006 11:05

God how awful

I would certainly get rid if I had one.
