I need to pick a 90cm gas hob. I'd like to pick it today. The brands that are available:

  • AEG
  • Bosch
  • Britannia
  • Miele
  • Neff
  • Siemens
  • Smeg

Any opinions?

Also, any opinions re: glass/porcelaine/metal surfaces under the burners?

I am on to my second smeg hob.

First one was all stainless steel, including the rack bits that you put pans on etc. These discoloured very quickly due to the heat, so my second one is the same, but with black iron racks - these have survived better.

I like it, but beware when cleaning it - I left a product on too long and it discoloured the brushed stainless steel.

I have neff .. its stainless steel with a glass bit at the front under the dials .. the steel is fine because you just baby oil it once in a while to keep the shine but the glass is a bugger to keep smear free because it gets food on it etc etc .. have iron stands though

all in all I like it but don't think I'd choose the glass frontage bit again

love my Neff but have brushed steel finish so much easier to keep looking clean.

.. yes brushed steel not stainless .. but still has glass bit

Great points, re: cleaning. Will look at list again.

I have a brushed steel one (came with new house) but beware my gas rings are in diamon foramtion instead of square so the back one you cant reach if you have two other pans on and the front one is so close to the edge i think it is far too dangerous so dont buy one in this style. highly impratical.

sorry diamond formation bad typing due to baby being asleep on my lap

Just did a bunch of research on this topic because I refurb'd my kitchen last year. I wanted a professional-style hob for a home kitchen. In the end, I had my choices narrowed down to Britannia or Viking (Wolf was another option, but I preferred a closed-burner hob). Ended up going with the Viking, but probably would have been happy with either.

From your list of choices, I personally thought the Britannia was better constructed. Also need to consider the burner power. If I recall correctly, the power of the Britannia was stronger than Neff and the others.
