Leapster or gameboy for DD aged 6?

I was looking at the Leapster for DDs birthday. She will be 6 at the end of this month. My SiL (who has an opinion on everything, incidentally) reckons she will outgrow it very quickly and I'd be better off getting her a Gameboy.

Now I don't know a great deal about Gameboys, but I do like the vaguely educational aspect of the Leapster. Are the GB games all just for fun? Nothing against fun, btw

don't know the Leapster at all
DD(6 and a half) got Nintendogs a month ago and loves it, it's a great game and doesn't get frustrating.
she tried games like Madagascar but didn't enjoy them as she found them too hard after a while

I would recommend Nintendogs, lovely game

btw we are not 'gamers' at all, and I do limit the time she plays with it

I wonder if she would "get" it. Are they easy to control?

yes they are, you use mostly a little stylet pen on the touch screen, no fast button action stuff (which my dd couldn't do)
the puppies don't grow up and don't get sick or die, so not stressful either. You train them , feed them, groom them, take them for walks, etc

Is the leapster a more advanced Leapad?

As far as I can see, yes. There are no books though, just the cartidges and the games on the screen. Still have the pen too.

I think I have seen them but thought a 6 year old would grow out of it fast, just my opinion though!
