Are cotbeds any good?

I'm expecting in two months' time - and just starting to get to grips with all the baby stuff I'm going to need.
Can anyone tell me if cotbeds are good value for money?
My husband and I would rather buy baby equipment that will last a while, instead of a constant stream of stuff the baby will grow out of really fast.

Hi there - congrats on pregnancy! Had a cotbed for DS1 - he slept in it until he was 4 (obviously as a bed!). Now DS2 (nearly 10 mths) is in the cot and it's still going strong - just replaced the mattress.

Both my ds and dd were out the cot bed ( a big one) and into normal beds at 2ish as they were both very wriggly and needed the extra space. My friend's wee boy is still in his at 4 as he never moves in his sleep. Suppose it depends on the baby! We bought a cot for ds then were given a cot bed when dd came along 15m later! Sold them both for good prices so there's that to think about too. Good names such as M&P and Cosatto will sell better. I found the cot I wanted (Cosatto Lucy - £135 on average) then phoned Kiddicare (www.kiddicare.com - co.uk?) and they ordered it in for me for about £90 inc mattress. Worthwhile giving them a try when you've found what you want. If you don't live near peterborough they will deliver.

No matter what you WILL have stream of things bubba will grow out of really fast!! Sorry!!

ds3 will go straight from cot into bed at about age 2. ds1 did same. we were given a cot bed for ds2 but the sides werent as high as his cot and as he was particularly good at climbing i never used it as a cot! lasted from 18 months (as a bed)til he was about 3, seriously doubt ds3 would fit it even now as he is much bigger.

you actually need surprisingly little baby stuff, most of it just collects dust

we've got mamas & papas cotbeds for both our girls (nearly 3 and 5.5) and I think they've been excellent value. will replace them with bunk beds in next year or so and hope to sell the cotbed frames on.

Another vote for cot beds. Have always had them they are much more roomy than normal cots which is good as mine wriggle a lot. ds3 went into a proper big bed from the cot bed when he was almost 3 and now ds4 is in it.

I have used the same cot bed for all three of mine. I have never used it as a bed though - DD1 went in a proper bed at 2.5, DD2 at about 3.5 and DS at 3. I just drop the side right down and they clamber in and out. No need to faff around with a safety rail either.
