Dh wants to get dd an ipad and she says she would prefer a laptop. I am not sure what would be more practical in the end. What do your dc have?

Erm I think an iPad would only be practical if you wanted your dd to play games and browse the net. A laptop can be used for PowerPoint, writing, research etc. it's a lot more practical for school work. Do you not have a family computer she can use? I honestly don't think an 11yr old would benefit from her own iPad.

Laptop.

(I have both)

yes we do have a family computer but since it is in the office, she cannot use it when dh or I need to work on it. She does not actually desperately need her own computer at all IMO but he would like to buy her one. She doesn't play any games online at all so for that she wouldn't need it, at least not at the moment. Thanks for that. So a laptop then

I would say laptop too. Plus I am less sure about child protection settings on the iPad.....this has prompted me as I found dd looking for a website the other day in Safari, and told me she had already googled. She is 7 and I NO idea she knew how to do that.....

they have no problem with technology, do they? I do but I see I do have to get to grips with it. I suppose she saw you or dh google something and just learnt it that way. Dc are phenomenal learners given half the chance. Yes, I just told dh that I think if he gets something, it had better be a laptop. However really I feel it isn't necessary and by the time she might genuinely need it , it will be outdated.

Still if they want, why not in the end?

I'd say a laptop as it is more flexible. She will be able to do far more on it, including homework.
