Smashed my wing mirror - where to get a replacement that won't cost the earth?

Due to my own stupidity and being extremely pre-menstrual I managed to smash my drivers side wing mirror yesterday. Not only did the glass shatter, but the whole thing is now hanging feebly from a wire.
My car is a Mitsubishi and I know if I go to the main delaer the part will cost me an arm and a leg. Dh reckons he could fit it if I get a replacement, but where do I go ? Will Halfords or somewhere like that do a make of mirror that fits my car ?

Depends on the age of the car, how popular a model etc but have you tried local breakers yards?

spacecadet · 29/01/2006 19:37

how old is it?

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 19:40

mechanic dh says ring local scrap yard and see if they have one, you dh could fit it. it would be cheap and genuine.
dont know how easy to fit. he does them often so says easy. i would of thought the wires would be tricky but im just a woman!!!

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 19:40

oh and halfords wont do one he says!

KBear · 29/01/2006 19:41

call your local breakers yard, tell them make and model and you might strike lucky.

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 19:42

oh and also...remove old mirror as it will ruin paint work.....shall i just send him round!!1??

spacecadet · 29/01/2006 19:44

when i needed a car wing mirror, i just rang up the scrapyard, they took the old one off, fitted new one there and then for 25 quid

Kayleigh · 29/01/2006 19:52

lol kayleigh!, well i would say def contact breakers yard then.

Kayleigh · 29/01/2006 20:11

I didn't realise there were so many locally. I could only think of one. Have looked up on Yellow Pages and have found 7 in about a 3 mile radius.
Have made a list and will be on the phone first thing. Will let you know how I get on.
Thank you ladies.

Can't thaank you enough ladies.
I phoned my Mitsubishi dealer and they wanted £110 for the wing mirror and £178 to supply it and fit it PLUS VAT.
I found a local breakers yard that dealt in Japanese cars. He had the part for £35 and fitted it for another £10. So a saving of £133 pounds.
And it literally took him 3 mins to fix.

Thank you

bloody hell! those dealers are awful aren't they? am totally shocked!

Kayleigh · 30/01/2006 18:46

It's the £70 to fit it that really got me.
He gave me the price broken down as i told him my dh could probably fit it. He mumbled something about it being a big job, removing door panels etc.
It really was only a three minute job and the guy at the breakers yard never went near the door panel. It was an electric wing mirror too, so that three minutes included putting all the wires back together.
Bloody cheek.
