We are looking to downsize our current petrol guzzling 11 year old modeo with a smaller more economical model probably diesel.

Needs to have enough room in the back for two adult sized teenage girls but other wise doesn't need to be huge (wse are long past the baby paraphenalia stage.) I want something with a bit of oomph that looks nice.

Have test driven the Audi A1 which I loved to drive but the head room in the back is crap so no good for my teen DDs.

I have heard good things about the Mazda 2, Fiat Punto and Volkswagen Polo.

Any recomendations?

I've a toyota Yaris and love it. Back seat moves back for more leg room or forward for more boot. 50mpg, cheap tax & low insurance.

I love my Honda Jazz. Plenty of headroom for my very tall husband too, and the back seats do all sorts of things. Very reliable.

Re headroom , my mum has a newer Yaris & my dad is fine in the back at 6ft. not competively defending the Yaris honest

Only 2 doors but love our Fiat 500

Toyota verso is great. Seats at the back move back and forth and there's plenty of headroom too.

Honda Jazz!

rosie39forever · 13/05/2012 19:15

Fiat panda loads of head room and really economical to run.

BsshBossh · 17/05/2012 10:35

I love my Toyota Yaris. It's the newest model and is very spacious inside - lots of leg room. It's a smooth ride too.

5 door fiesta - i have the titanium model which has loads of lovely extras but good engine size economical to run and I love it - is super spacious - loads bigger than you would imagine...

I have a Grande Punto and I really can't fault the space in the back. And it really does have an alright amount of boot space (I can fit a fortnight's supermarket shop in there with our beast of a pushchair).

I've travelled very comfortably in the back seat on a 4 hour journey before. I was really quite impressed.

StetsonsAreCool · 19/05/2012 15:40

Oh, I have an 08 Eleganza model. It has a lighter/power socket in the boot to plug your iphone/DS into. And dual air con controls in the front and bluetooth handsfree phone connection. Bloody love my car Grin

Inthepotty · 28/05/2012 22:24

I keep going on and on about it but... The Kia Venga 3 is amazing. I've had lots of cars over 5 years, and it's fab, so much room! Doesn't feel like a small car at all, headroom is great and seats move to allow more legroom/bootspace.

honestly doesn't work for Kia I sell shoes in RL

DZH · 28/05/2012 22:36

Skoda Fabia, the quality of a VW but much cheaper. The 1.9 turbo diesel has some ooomph too.

MrsJohnDeere · 28/05/2012 22:36

BMW 1 series. Lovely to drive (if you don't mind everyone else on the road hating you and assuming you're a twat).

Artura · 27/06/2012 20:58

Honda Jazz! Ok, the only other people I see driving one are over 70, but it's a lovely, lovely car. I've had two now. Current one has automatic headlights, wipers etc, and cruise control, which is great for motorway driving. Very economical on petrol. It might not quite fit your "bit of oomph that looks nice" criteria, but do try a test drive. Back seats suprisingly spacious too.
