Kindle won't connect to PC

I was given a kindle at Christmas in the UK. I couldn't register it immediately because I didn't have a wifi connection, but I connected it to my father's PC, and downloaded a few free ebooks. I registered it just before leaving the UK. Now I'm back home (in Morocco) I can't get either my home PC or my work laptop to recognise the kindle at all. I plug it in and get the message "Insert disk in drive D". I've tried using different USB ports, I've tried different combinations of connecting the kindle while it's off and then switching it on, or connecting it while it's on, and the result is still the same.
Has anyone else had this? Does anyone know if Amazon customer service will help me if I'm outside the UK, or if I have to wait till the next time I'm in the UK to call them?
I was so thrilled to get the kindle, and it's very frustrating that I can't download anything onto it :(.

I'd try the customer service, pretty sure there is a telephone or email option to talk to them.

Thanks, I emailed the Amazon customer service and heard back with instructions to call them at a US number, or have them call me back from a US number. So have to do that now, from home this evening if possible... and hope they don't charge me for the call.
I'd hoped there'd be a solution which didn't involve international phone calls...
