Kindle without a wireless network. Is this possible?

I've bought someone a kindle as a present. They're really pleased with it but it seems they have no wifi and are unable to connect it via the USB on their computer. Is this possible? Do you need wifi to have a kindle?

I would have thought that if you've already got the kindle registered to your Amazon account, even if you haven't got a wifi connection, you could just take it with you to your local cafe if it has wifi facility and use their wifi to get your books onto it?

Why can't they connect it to their computer? It should be quite easy with the lead.
