Buying a trumpet for a 9 yr old

Wondered if anyone would be able to advise on the best trumpet to buy for a 9 yr old boy. He has been learning this instrument, with his class, for the last 18 months and has the free hire of a pocket trumpet. These lessons are coming to an end but 9 yr old wants to continue.

We thought about buying a trumpet now and starting formal lessons in September, this way he can prove to us that he will practice etc, also is in an orchestra. Music teacher told us to aim for price new between £150 and £200, but not recommended a make.

We are a little bemused as we are not musical at all. Any advice would be most appreciated.

we just went to a local music shop and took their advice.

I think we paid approx £130 for a 'student' trumpet for our 9 year old and will upgrade it in a couple of years if he sticks at it !!

He did use his birthday money towards it so he was keen as it is a big outlay then lessons, books etc

Thankyou, we took your advice and went to a music shop. We bought a new trumpet for £180, a Yamaha, it comes with a one year warranty and manual. Loads of advice given also. Bought it for his birthday.

Oops, too late, was going to say that many music shops do a hire purchase policy on instruments: you hire it for a montly fee but after 18 months it's yours anyway.
