Ipod nano, shall I buy a 2gb or 4 and will I find it for less than £140?

I'm thinking of getting one for dh but as someone who isn't interested in music I don't know what difference the storage sizes make - the 2gb holds 500 songs, the 4gb 1000 songs but the difference is £40 and while I don't mind spending £140 £180 feels more extravagent somehow. Those of you who listen to music, would you find the 2gb with 500 songs enough or would it seriously limit what you listened to on it? Or should I just get the 4gb? Dh does like music but I'm not sure he gets that much time in which to listen tbh. Also, the Apple store have them for £140/£180 with engraving, anyone think I'll get it cheaper anywhere? TIA, as someone who doesn't really listen to music I have no idea at all!

500 songs = up to 50 albums. If he really loves his music then that is not enough WWW. I bought myself the El Gordo of iPods before Xmas (engraved "Well at least I love you, Marina XXX ) and have already put 900 plus tracks on the so and so.
I don't think you will beat their price, but I got mine at John Lewis and they were very kind to an iPod virgin and did not try to sell me any of those ridiculous socks or in-flight plug-ins...

I have the 2gb one and so far I have put about 12 Cds onto it. Still have loads of memory left - a good 2/3rds at least I am sure. Mine was £139 in Dixons.

I find mine plenty big enough. I listen to it, on shuffle mainly, in the car on way home from work or on a visit, or at the gym.

Depends, I guess, what he will use it for. I can't imagine ever needing all my CDs on one player.

Suppose if he was going to not buy Cds anymore and only buy them as downloads it could get restrictive after a while. If just putting own music on, then it is fine as you can very easily update what is on it or not anyway.

Marina, he does like music and because I don't rarely listens at home. so that leaves the car, the walk to work and lunchtimes. I don't even know how many tracks are on an albumn these days so couldn't even have worked that out so thank you! They do look v cool, so much that I almost want one but obv, that would be pointless! OK, looks like £180 then! Hula, good point, he won't buy cds I guess so I should prob get the one with more storage.

How come you "don't like music"? Can understand not interested (well, can't but ykwim) but don't like?

Hulababy · 18/01/2006 11:12

Yes, if not buying the actual CD, prefering to buy the downloads only, then the bigger memory is definitely better.

I still buy the Cds, prefering them to the downloads - hence the smaller one working for me.

Tinks, I know, I'm weird. I honestly don't like it much apart from the odd pop track or classical piece, I'm just not keen on music as background. In the car I listen to radio 2 (and quite often turn it down a lot if the music's too in yer face) or 3 unless it's grating violins or 4 unless it's news, which I find too depressing to listen to. But just as often I have silence in the car. I stopped being interested in about 1986, hence Tainted Love and the like are the last thing I remember

WWW, I say this very hesitantly...but my MIL is another otherwise cultured, well-informed & read etc person who never ever listens to music. In every other respect you do not resemble her as she is a moo of the highest order
Get him a proper fatty iPod

WideWebWitch · 18/01/2006 15:01

Marina, I will! Thanks

You WILL want one too! DS1 had one for Christmas and it is just so lovely to touch... and the sound is wonderful. I don't like earphones but can cope with this. Black is very classy.
