Oh and he has just turned 7 and is actually a year behind at School (Scottish School system, he should have gone at 4 1/2 but we were able to delay it until 5 1/2).

Blimey Cod! What's wrong with Thomas! A big wooden railway has been a fairly recent purchase for us too and yes DS1, aged 7, loves it as well, in fact he keeps asking me to buy the proper Thomas trains as we only have cheepo ones from ELC and Tesco.

I think my DS1 can still stand Thomas, but doesn't love him any more. And yeah, builders are great, he got to try on an actual builder's hat on the tube yesterday. It's just Bob that's not acceptable for DS1.

MrsSpoon · 15/01/2006 22:37

Not trying to start an argument on fairydust's thread, honest. I geniunely shocks me that Bob and Thomas are too babyish for four year olds, I thought that was the market they were aimed at?

no cod I think your post about what to get for a boy you don't know is spot on! No one has disagreed with books or balls....

MrsSpoon · 15/01/2006 22:40

Agreed, books and balls fab!

gingernut · 15/01/2006 23:13

Thunderbirds, micromachines, playmobil (firemen, airport stuff, construction workers). Age-appropriate building sets e.g. meccano, lego (the small stuff), brio builder system. Board ganes (e.g. orchard or the Boots ones). Books e.g. Harry and the dinosaurs.

Not Bob or Thomas. My ds isn't at all into drawing and colouring either, but does like painting.

MaryBS · 16/01/2006 07:35

My 4yo still LOVES Thomas. He is absolutely crazy about Thunderbirds, plus anything to do with Space and the Space shuttle

kid · 16/01/2006 07:39

My 3.9 DS loves lego and magnetix. You get loads of different sized ones depending on the age it is for.

BudaBabe · 16/01/2006 08:03

Mine is still into cars - must have 200 or so but still loves a new one!

Sticker books/activity books also good.

Pfer · 16/01/2006 08:22

ds1 (4) likes spiderman, batman, star wars, spongebob, ninja turtles, jackie chan, cars, light sabres, guns, tanks,......you get the idea?

mind you he has refused to wear any t-shirts with brum, bob etc for quite some time. nothing can have logo's on with kiddy stuff!. think he's 4 going on 14!

suzywong · 16/01/2006 08:25

Marble run
very useful if you don't like the parents very much as they will have to go cross eyed trying to assemble the fiddly thing for the kid

jambuttie · 16/01/2006 08:28

turtles, power rangers

Pfer · 16/01/2006 08:29

suzy. BIL bought DS1 a pirate ship last year and it took me over an hour to put it together, but the best ever was when I bought him a micro machines van than opens out to be a road. It had over 100 tiny fiddly stickers to put on. Dh and I took it in turns still took over 2 1/2 hrs!! We have since learnt not to buy these things.

Meanoldmummy · 16/01/2006 09:08

This is scary....DS1 (3.3) is still into Noddy, Ivor the Engine, Thomas, Mr Men, Bagpuss..... he's never had anything with guns or tanks or action heroes of any kind. I just thought he was too young for all that, would still have thought so at 4. He's starting nursery school tomorrow, will that make a difference? What am I in for?!?!?

Meanoldmummy · 16/01/2006 09:09

He does love his marble run/lego/construction stuff and loves books though

northerner · 16/01/2006 09:11

My ds is 4 in April. A fail safe present for him would be: Turtles, Spiderman, Superman, Action man, sticker books or cars/trucks or soldiers/swords.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2006 09:27

A lot depends on whether they have an older brother. DS2 had much older tastes than DS1 at 4.

ladymuck · 16/01/2006 09:31

Agree with Soupy. Ds2 (2.7) is running round the house pretending to be Black Ranger. Ds1 didn't know what Power Rangers were at the same age - Thomas was king!

iota · 16/01/2006 09:32

Agree with SoupDragon - my 4 yr old has a 6 yr old bro and spurns Bob, Thomas etc in favour of Bionicles, Star wars - in fact everything on Pfer's list

He does have a 4 yr old friend who is mad about trains, incl Thomas though
