alternatives to bt other than cable for net access?

are there any? I shall be offline for several days until BT fix the local exchange. I am so sick of BT but we have no cable here. Help - any alternative considered. If I didn't need net access I'd just have a mobile phone!

very expensive though

Will your landline be out?

You can have net access via a mobile phone type thing, a blackberry or similar. You can put a mobile phone sim in some special laptops or modems.

I think there's very slow access via radio, but don't know anything about it. Also, will all your neighbours be out? You might be able to, um, "borrow" wireless?

GPRS (mobile "broadband") is very expensive.
All landlines run through BT exchanges.
Satellite is expensive.
Sky are working on media/internet though their systems but it's still little way off (2007?)

Bottom line...

it's BT or whistle unless you have lots of disposable income.

for the moment

forgot this one:

get a job and surf at work

after phoning customer services to complain about being offline for days BT strangely found they could fix my phone in less than 4 days! Could be because I have threatened them with the regulator in the past

Phone went totally dead and I had to post my last message from the local library computer but net access there is so limited didn't have time to check out alternatives. Unfortunately satellite is a bit too expensive so I'm stuck with useless BT
