cotton pleat vs pads- what is the difference?

Hello newbie here my 1st son is now a week old (aw) :)

Sorry to be dim, but these products are doing my head in. I understand cotton balls and rolls; I can picture what a pad is, but how is this different from pleat? Please help!

I think the pads must be pre-cut but pleats are semi joined together so you can pull them apart. I stopped using cotton wool and started to use baby wipes, less mess.

I am a fan of the wipes, but hubby wants some type of cotton wool!
