Kobo or kindle

I wanted a kindle for Xmas but the person who is going to buy it for me has said the kobo is better as the guy in the shop told him the books are generally cheaper and your not limited to amazon to buy books. I know a bit about the kindle but not much about this kobo, has anyone got it?

With the kindle you're not limited to amazon either, you can switch formats using calibre.
