Sky+ vs DVD recorder?

We currently have a big old TV, and Sky+ so we can have the kids favourite programmes at any time of day or night

But we're considering replacing the TV with a wall mounted one so they can't turn it on/off constantly - and most of them seem to have freeview built in. Is there any point looking at a DVD recorder and cancelling the sky subscription - is there a big difference in channels available (we don't get sports or movies anyway, kids TV, cooking/house porn, DH like documentaries and simpsons/family guy) or quality of reception?

And if we stick with sky+ can you use a DVD recorder or not?
