IPOD Touch account. how does it work?

Am thinking of buying my 9yr old an IPOD Touch for xmas. How do you set up the account and how much is it likely to cost me? Can you get free stuff on it. Don'y want to end up with a huge monthly bill.

You don't have to go online directly. Register for itunes and you can download free "taster" versions of most games/"apps" and buy music tracks, films/tv and games then transfer onto the itouch. Some games do charge for extra credits, items, characters etc as you play so you may need to disable that. dd has used ds' itouch but tbh I would n't buy her her own yet as they are pretty fragile - she's 10.
