Morning all. My mum is thinking of getting my step-father a kindle but she has no idea where to statrt. I can't help her, can you? Apparently you need accessories etc etc. Anyone know the best one stop shop place to get one from or anything else you need to tell us about buying one?
Thanks x

Try posting here. Most are kindle threads too so you might get some ideas from other threads. I didn't even know that section existed until a few weeks ago!

Oh thanks for that. I had a look through to find the best place to post but missed that. Thanks OvO xx

the only accessory you might need is a cover. this is not strictly necessary, but it does make reading it more booklike, and does help protect against scratches etc.

there are a variety of covers, from cheap and cheerful neoprene, through to top end expensive leather with a light included.

which kindle was you mum thinking about getting? as with all technology, there are pros and cons to each type. and make sure the cover (if she gets one) is the right sort for the spec of thekindle (bit like ipods/iphones - the cover needs to fit right)

is it a kindle specifically she wants to buy (amazon ereader - books all available from amazon. other ebooks not compatible (well, they are but you need to convert the format), or an ereader? there are different makes available - again, pros and cons as to which one she might want to buy.

I have a kindle - wifi version. dh has the 3g version. I htink they are fab, and the convenience of amazon outweighs the con of not being able to easily buy books from elsewhere, imo.

Blimey, hello Thomcat - haven't seen your name on MN for ages!

I got my Kindle from Amazon. The only extras I bought were a case (essential if you're going to use it when out and about, but not if you're only using it at home) and a three year warranty (not essential, but I thought it was sensible in case I drop the thing in the bath or something). It comes with a mains charger (you can use the lead to charge it on your computer too).

The other thing to consider is whether to get the new Kindle (cheaper, no keyboard) or the original one with a keyboard. I like the keyboard for annotations, but your step-father might not be bothered about that.
