If you like quick reads have you ever tried Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected? Is available on Kindle - its short stories. A symphany of bizarre, dark, (strangely comic) and surreal. Light crime/ thrillers try Simon Brett, MC Beaton, a bit agatha Christie esque, or Alexander McCall Smith - the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency are a treat - easy reading and short...a bit over 200 pages probably but easy peasey.

How about Bloody Valentine? This one's not a thriller but is also from this year's quick reads and is worth taking a look at.

Oooh thanks I had forgotten about tales of the unexpected I used to LOVE that on the telly when I was a teenager (searching for my DD 14 not me). I will read the James Patterson first in case too scary/sexy!!

Will second welly's suggestion of No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. Should be fine as there they aren't sexy or gory. Some of the themes, like love and betrayal are mature but are always handled very well and it can't be a bad thing to read about it at 14.

There again my Mum gave me Molly Parkin to read at that age so what do I know Grin.
