Does it have to be a Kindle

Any other good e-readers? I'm thinking of getting one each for my children for Christmas.

Or I was thinking about it at the price of the new Kindle. But after reading up on it's specs it's disappointing it doesn't have an audio book facility.

Interesting that they have removed the text-to-speech function and ability to play audio. Mind you suppose those features are not actually used that often by most people - I rarely use those features (not all books permit text-to-speech).

Probably best if you consider where you will be purchasing the books themselves. As if you would be getting them from somewhere other than amazon, then whichever retailer you are getting the books from may have the books in a specific format for a certain e-reader.

Hadn't realised the text to speach and audio facilities had been removed, I use the nanny! Know the text to speech is a bit robotic but sometimes love to lie in the bath and have a chapter or two read to me, especially as the book I'm reading is so long. I also listen to audio books while I'm doing the housework.

Katherine don't think it has to be a kindle at all, there are lots of others out there.

I cracked and bought one for myself. Children will have to wait :) I got a refurb keyboard one and LOVE it! One question though, when it's connected to computer it says I can disconnect it and still use it when plugged in. But I can't work out how as the screen remains the same. Is this a fault or do I not know the secret keys to do this?

Do you have a PC? I go to My Computer, and it shows the computer drives and then the Kindle as a drive - I click on that and it shows an option to Eject

KatharineClifton · 14/10/2011 14:59

That's what I do, and the kindle is ejected from the PC, but the screen on the kindle does not change and I'm not able to use it. Not that I really need to, but I wondered if it were a fault what with it being a refurb one?

It doesn't sound like it's working properly and I would contact Customer Services in case yoiu need to get a replacement.

Were you supplied with a mains charger with your Kindle? I often use that because it charges faster.

pinkhebe · 14/10/2011 16:24

That happens on my refurb model too...

KatharineClifton · 14/10/2011 17:51

No mains charger, just usb one. That's interesting pinkhebe! It must be a fault then! I will contact them.
