Digital camera-which?

My lovely mum has offered to buy us a digital camera up to value of about £130 for Xmas /birthday combined, (yay big )but we have to choose it and order it.

I am completely at a loss here. I know nothing about these things. I don't even know where to start! I'm used to taking photos on a (manual) SLR but this talk of pict bridges is beyond me (thought the picts were something to do with history?)

Some cameras seem to offer "movie mode" which I'm not bothered with really. Just want something I can take decent quality pictures with for uploading and printing off.

My mum bascially wants us to take lots of photos of the grandchildren, and provided that we do that she will be happy.

Can someone tell me what I should look for? Even better can someone just reccomend a decent camera in that price range? I don't want fancy stuff, just to take pictures of the kids.

Theres one on offer in argos, camera and photo printer which is about 100 quid (i think the camera on its own costs about that) we bought it this morning but havent used it yet so i dont know how good it is.

what about this one Olympus 99.99

LilacBump · 15/12/2005 17:11

i'd buy a canon. found them best for normal and digital cameras.

canon - least shutter lag IMHO. If you can get her to stretch to one of the digital Ixuses they're small, easy to use and take great pictures, but the Powershots are great too

I have a Canon Powershot SD200 (digital elph/ixus) which is fab - great pictures and the size of a credit card (but about 1.5cms thick). Really easy to use as well.

I'm just reviewing DC's for myself - I'm torn between Canon A520 and Nikon Coolpix 4600

Hi, we got a canon ixus 40 in the end, arrived from amazon yesterday, very pleased.

If anyone wants a cheap one, tescos are doing them for £30.
