So who here gets a Christmas present they haven't chosen and bought themselves?

Go on make me sick.

Dh last got me a surprise present in 1998..........

Are there really couples who go out and choose each other thoughtful presents or are most people not arsed like us?

Oh I did, once!

It was a F**88 blender. From Dp.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 19:57

Eh, DH mostly buys things I've chosen, but he generally gets me at least one surprise.

The annoying thing is: a) it's often something expensive I don't need and b) he goes on for ages, beforehand, about how much lovely stuff he's got me, by which point anything is a letdown.

fruitful · 13/12/2005 19:59

Well, dh asked me for my Christmas wish list this year, and I told him I didn't have one. He has been industriously surfing the internet and has instructed me not to open any parcels...

WigWamBam · 13/12/2005 20:05

When my dh chooses presents for me himself they're always completely inappropriate ... I asked for a cross-stich kit one year and got an electric piano. I can't play the piano. I don't want to learn the piano.

This year I have had a cross-stitch picture framed and told him he's paid for it as my present, and I have given him an advert for some perfume that I want, with "BUY ME THIS" scribbled all over it. I think he'll get the hint.

I am crap with my DP, but he has bought me a gorgeous coat and some fantastic boots in the last 12 months for Xmas and birthday. I wouldn't presume that I would know what he likes, but he gets it right.

Feistybird · 13/12/2005 20:07

God that sounds smug. He's crap in other ways honestly.

Hmm, dh got me some nice underwear last year but I suspect it was more for his benefit than mine! ANyway, it was way too big and got taken back! He also bought me 2 perfume sets from the kids though adn they were lovely.

This year he's bought me something but I've a sneaky suspicion it's a watch i saw in a magazine and pointed out to my mum - mainly cos he said he's confered with my mother and I've seen the wrapped box - looks watch sized and feels watch weight

Bless im

Nope, don't do presents to/from each other. Only stockings, which sadly I have to buy and supply (his money though) everything thats in there!! Purely from the fact that I love getting a stocking, OK it's not that exciting when you know exactly whats in there, but it's better than not getting one at all. At least I know whats in there is stuff I want

merrycompo · 13/12/2005 20:12

I do but he usually gets it wrong. But I guess it's the thought that counts

SilentBite · 13/12/2005 20:18

I do, he is very thoughtful and I don't think I've ever had something crap tbh

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 20:24

Oh, DH did once buy me an "abs and glutes" Tae Bo DVD. But he really didn't mean that by it, and I liked Tae Bo in those days.

Dh always asks for a general idea but normally does pretty well. The only year I can complain was 2003 when he bought me Kim and Aggies "How Clean is Your House?" book. By the time I'd finished with him he wished he'd bought it in paperback

It's me who's awful with gifts for him. He's one of these men who if he wants it, buys it there and then, which doesn't leave much to get him. This year I sujjested a new pair of trainers (as his have a hole right through the sole) he said okay. Two days later he told me he'd just ordered my Christmas present to him other the net. Well, at least I know he'll like it. Had to return his birthday pressie.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 13/12/2005 20:48

I never tell him what I want because I can never think of anything. And he usually does pretty well. Came back with some jimmy choos last year which stunned me rather, didn't know he'd even heard of them.

My only steer this year was when we were in spacenk buying presents for sisters-in-law etc, and I told him "by the way, if you ever don't know what to get me for xmas or birthday etc , pretty much anything from this shop will do".

So we'll see what he comes up with this year!

BudaBabeInAManger · 13/12/2005 20:50

A few years ago I gave DH a "wish list" - idea being he would get a few things from it - he bought them all!!! RESULT!!

We used to have a tradition where he woudl go into Body Shop and buy every diff bar of soap they did and wrap them seperately - and I would have to open them!!

First year we were together he bought me lots of chocs, a bottle of Amaretto, nice shortbread etc - and book called "Think yourself Slim"!!!! Oh - and a book called "how to be a Brit"!!! (I'm Irish and PROUD!!).

We're still together - just!

hoXMASchick · 13/12/2005 20:54

my dp moans & groans about the shopping but has always bought me fab presents.

Mercy · 13/12/2005 20:54

Treefuses and Wigwambam, sorry but your stories are so funny - I'm laughing out loud!

Passionflowerinapeartree · 13/12/2005 22:09

Yep DH is really good at this. Always get something lovely and thoughtful. It the past have had a gold neckless brought back from south africa. A gold watch. A silver bracelet. A day at a spa with treatments.

He also always buys excellent anniversary presents always with a connection to the year (eg wood was treasure box with secret panels to find to get to the lock).

We do our own stockings though.
