Stupid question about travel cots!

I'm about to buy a travel cot from Kiddicare but most come without a mattress. Is the mattress necessary? Also, has anyone used Kiddicare's own travel cot?

Really, the mattress is usually folded around the travel cot.

I thought most were folded round... although they are quite thin and hard...

They normally have a loose padded(an inch or so thick) base which folds around the collapsed travel cot and doubles as a basic mattress.

We bought ours from kiddicare years ago. I am sure they all come with a special travel cot mattress, as snowfalls, said, they are wrapped around them aren?t they? Ours has a waterproof nylon type cover over the mattress/base, one side is hard with I guess something like plywood, the other side with padding in between the wood and cover. It is segmented into four rectangle so that it wraps around the cot when folded up with hard side on the outside and has tabs to tie it all together and handles.
We don?t use an extra mattress as I think baby?s are quite lightweight and don?t need it too soft. I just pop a cot blanket on the padded base followed by a fitted cot sheet and this is fine

now that DS is heavier (30lbs) I've just bought a travel cot mattress from Mothercare. It's nice and padded. I'll be using it at Christmas with the IL's if you need to know if it's any good!
