Lending Kindle books

Amazon says this is possible for a 14 day period only if the book is designated as loanable. I have checked my library and none of my books bought so far seem to have this facility, so it seems pretty useless. Has anyone done this successfully?

I do remember seeing a thread on here a couple of months ago where people were swapping Kindle books via their e-mail addresses. I cannot seem to find that thread - can anyone link it please. Or perhaps it has been deleted (illegal possibly).

It seems to me that giving your friend your e-book to read is no different from passing on a paperback when you have finished with it. Any help on how to do this would be gratefully received.
