Which wipes?

Which own brand wipes are the cheapest and most effective please? Have been using Pampers but need to save some money!

MaggieW, if there's a Lidl near you they're v. cheap in there. Or you could try using plain cotton wool and water?

Or buy a box of Jay clothes and use them with water or bubble bath and water. That way you can wash them and use them again!

We use plain cotton wool and water at home - cheap, plus no added fragrances etc to irritate the baby's skin. When we're out and about we use wipes - I always get the fragrance free - sensitive skin ones, because my dd has a tendency to dry skin - so some of the cheapest brands are out. I get Sainsbury's own brand quite often, or a co-op pharmacy brand.

We use cotton wool and water on our 14month old DD as she has an allergy to wipes, every single brand (yes, even the hypoallergenic, super-sensitive ones) gives her a red, sore botty . Once you get into the swing of things with the cotton wool it's really no less convenient than wipes.

I've always been totally happy with Sainsbury's own brand (not the economy which just shred far too easily) .. and a friend of mine swears by the Lidl wipes. HTH

Sainsbury's is ok, but go for UNPERFUMED every time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tescos "opo up" ones in the purple pack are good but sometimes don't separate so you end up with a handful rather than one. Boots ones are also good. Both these have a plastic lid on the pack.

I always buy masses of whatever brand is on BOGOF at the time and haven't bought a full priced packet for longer than I can remember.

I agree with Tom - go for the unfragranced ones! I absoultely despise the fragrance of the pink Johnsons ones I don't ever buy these even if they're on offer.

The 'fabric' ones, ie disposable but not paper, are machine-washable as I discovered by accident. You can put them in a box-type dispenser straight from the washing machine, or dry them first, and make up your own cleanser to pour into the box, or use just plain water.

Get a lenght of fleece from a fabric shop and make your own, they wash and dry really quickly and cost next to nothing.

I have found that Boots and Sainsburys have too much 'soap' in them and leave the skin quite foamy and sticky.

Have to admit I do prefer the Pampers Sensitive best, and I have tried lots!

Don't know whether it is nationwide but our local Asda is selling boxes of 6 Pampers wipes for £5.98 which obviously works out at £1 per packet.

Just out of interest you cotton woolly peeps ... do you use the little balls or the make up pads or the rolls of cotton wool?
I ask because I hated the little balls as they were too tiny and fiddly ... and the rolls left bits of cotton wool on DS bum and the pads were pricey ...
Also ... I hated having to get a bowl of water every time ... pain in the bum for me ... so wipes were easiest ...
Funny how some people hate smells that others love ... I hate the smell of pampers wipes but love the smell of Johnsons pink ones. I was lucky - DS had no reaction to fragranced wipes so Johnson's it was when they were on offer and Tesco's own when Johnson's weren't ...

Hi Ghosty - I use shops own jays cloths. They have a similar feel to baby wipes but are reuseable. I keep them in a tupperware pot with some water (or if DH has had a headache I pich his chamomile teabag and use that to make a solution as its really good for skin). I could never be bothered to get the water every time either but this way they are always ready to use and if you leave the box by the radiator not too cold either. Keeps for a good few days by which time I've used them all anyway so swap around. Makes you realised how many you use !

I buy mine in bulk from the baby catalogue. They're flushable and biodegradable so the whole lot just goes down the loo, which is a lot more hygenic IMO. They are here

ATM, my local convenience store (Dillons chain) is selling packs of 80 soft baby wipes for £1. I tend to use the softer ones for face wiping.

For those who use cotton wool balls, Asda has a bargain big bag - 300 100% cotton wool balls for around £1.20. It says £1.85 on the bag but they seem to be on permanent special.

If you need to save money then buy two packs of white flannels from IKea and use them with water.

I think the best bought wipes are the Boots Sensitive Skin ones but they are expensive.

My favourite wipes (what a sad phrase) are the Co-ops own "ultra soft baby wipes - fragrance free with added baby lotion". They also do a cheaper version, but these are stronger and come in a purple pack with a resealable hole.
