MP3 players or CD Walkman?

DD has asked for a walkman for her Christmas Pressie. She will be 8, we are going abroad for Christmas - so I have been considering something small.

I was going to buy a CD walkman - But my dad thinks it will break too easily and she would be better with an MP3 player - however I would have to open that and download some tracks as she wouldn't be able to do that abroad.

Also I'm not sure if I am making work for my self (ie having to download stuff all the time)

Any thoughts? Is she too young? Is it practical?

simply for her age i'd get her a cd player, she can save and get her cd's and generally not bother you with it all the time, is she aware of mp3's and all that? as in she wont be grumpy you got her a 'big old' cd player when mp3's are the in thing?!

No - but my dad thought it would be less "destructable" because less moving parts

I can download CD's on one (I presume?)

I'd go with mps tbh, the cd's get scrathced lost and broken, you get a lot of movement which distorts the sounds, you can get cheap mp3 players, for instance we got an ipod shuffle free witn my new mobile phone
also downloading means you can control to a point what they listen too

Are they easy to use (I'm a little technically challenged)?

Yes basically same controls as CD player - next track, pause etc

katymac · 17/11/2005 22:07

Thanks & downloading - how is that? Copying CD's on to it

You should get some software with MP3 player that lets you convert a CD to mp3 files. Put CD into your PC & it them converts & sends to mp3 player. Quite quick & easy. Depends what size player you get as to how many tracks you can put on

Lovely just what I need - I'll only need to put about 20 tracks on to start with I guess

Thanks for the advise

They are very robust too - just watch the volume - ensure she doesn't play it too loud all the time - not good for little ears.

Comet have a small MP3 player that holds 20 songs for £20. I bought one for Ds2 who is 9 and will loose it within the first month!

Good advise - but she quite like quiet stuff atm (Katie Melua & Neil Diamond??)

Now I just need to find a reasonable one
