Archiving on kindle

I fear this may be a very stupid question, but I'm going to have to ask it:

Presumably the archive function is where you put books when you've read them, but want to keep them accessible to read again? If you put books in there, can you pull them back into active section? Once you've archived, can you delete the book from the active section without jeopardising access?

Thanks bran. Now I've forgotten how to actually archive the thing! I thought you had to open the book and then go to menu, but that doesn't seem to be working...

[Sigh] I am such a doofus with new technology...

when the book you want to archive is highlighted you click on the left arrow button and remove from device :)
