Want to read a Kindle book but don't have a Kindle?

Thought it might be an idea to put some details on here about how to read Kindle books without actually having a Kindle device.

There are several different methods:

Amazon: Kindle Reading Apps

There is for iPhone/iTouch
There is Kindle for PC
There is kindle for MAC
There is Kindle for iPad
There is Kindle for Android

If you by books via the app, then subsequently decide to buy a Kindle - the books download to your new Kindle when you connect it to a WiFi connection.

I find it a lot harder to read books on my laptop screen... but maybe that's just me. I gave Amazon feedback asking if in the future at some point a background colour could be selected, which might then take away some of the glare. They replied back, though couldn't say it would be introduced.

Anyone used these apps... do you find them ok to read, or is the background too bright?

use the kindle app for iPad. You can adjust the brightness of your screen. it isn't as easy to read in bright sunlight, you need to up the brightness to the max. I prefer just to have the iPad rather than a kindle as well as I use the iPad for Internet and games ( plus you can read in the dark without needing a separate light. also have the app for my MacBook, again fine to use.

I use Kindle app for the iPhone. I've had a play with a real Kindle, but prefer using the touch screen on the iPhone. I haven't noticed any problems with background colour.

Android users... the amazon page says:
Search For "Kindle" in the Android Market on your phone.
Requires Android OS 2.1 or Higher

iPhone users, search iTunes store for Kindle
this link might work

I use my iPad and it is very good.

LadyInTheRadiatOr - there is a solution for that. A twitter friend of mine uses an Aquapac
Twitter @darrengriffin:
Aquapac as good as its claims, survived a dunking @ shower. iPad dry and still working. And I did test case first with paper towel.

So if it works for an iPad it will work for a Kindle.

Aquapac Medium for Kindle. Large for iPad. Mini for iPhone.
