Help me avoid social suicide - which brand of tea should I buy?

I don't drink tea, so can't judge which are decent/not - which brand(s) should I have in the house for when tea-drinkers pop over (I wouldn't want to be the person known for her terrible tea)? + is there anything I need to know about any brands, is there a "News of the World" equivalent of the tea brands I need to avoid?

I think if you only have it for company then a nice one that is pretty universally liked is Twinings - English Breakfast Tea. It is like a slightly daintier builders tea. Its nice. I am a tea drinker and usually just buy own brand or Tetleys.

Dh likwes "builders' tea" - he's quite posh really though! Has been known to buy PG Tips. I drink Twinings Earl Grey.
Twinings seems ok to me but I'm not really an afficionado.

edam · 03/11/2005 18:53

Twinings Ceylon tea if you are offering... . English Breakfast will do. Actually I've been buying Fair Trade and it's fine.

You only get instant coffee in our house unless we are having a dinner party - cafetieres are too much faff for every day purposes.

flamesparrow · 03/11/2005 18:55

Anything other than earl grey for me... Milk in cup first, then water (or tea if from pot)

We drink Yorkshire Tea here.

Frenchgirl · 03/11/2005 21:21

was PMSL this morning listening to french radio report of 'tea festival' in paris next week-end: one of the organisers was talking about the many virtues of tea, saying how when you go to countries where they drink a lot of tea the people seem so much calmer and relaxed......which is due to the fact they drink tea

we drink clipper fairtrade
i love also Whittard Lapsang Souchong but not many people seem to like it....

Blossomhill · 03/11/2005 21:31

Have to say even though I don't shop there the best tea in the world is Co-op 99. I go there especially for it!

expatinscotland · 03/11/2005 21:32

TeaDirect. I like to buy it from Oxfam shop as well.

Milge · 03/11/2005 21:39

Fairtrade tea or Twinings English breakfast and you can't go far wrong. If you can track down Barrys Tea in the UK, then get that, it is the most refreshing tea i've drunk.

MrsSpoon · 03/11/2005 21:45

I buy either Tetley or supermarket 'Scottish' tea. Although have lately taken to green tea in the morning, camomile at night and fruit tea during the day.

As for coffee, coffee in our house could be a whole thread of its own. DH buys green beans and roasts them, then we grind them and make espresso in a commercial coffee machine, milk can then be frothed to make the coffee of your choice.

hornbag · 03/11/2005 22:21

It has to be Twinings Earl Grey

Avalon · 03/11/2005 22:50

Twinings Assam. My mum always compliments me on the tea - and she drinks PG.

paolosgirl · 03/11/2005 22:51

Any one of the fairly traded ones, please
