Bike carriers for cars

My DH and me are buying each other bikes for Xmas( I know, very romantic!) and we'd appreciate any advice on bike carriers. We've no real preference about roof or rear transportation; our 2 dd bikes currently fit in the Mondeo boot but once they're on the next size up they probably won't! Can you get carriers for 4 bikes? Hope you can help. Thanks.

I'll follow this with interest as I want to take DDs on long cycle rides. DH hasn't really mastered cycling so it is not a subject I can get him to discuss with any enthusiasm!

Would love some recommendations for suitable carriers for a three-year-old DS too.

We have a Thule system. It is designed for 4 bikes on roof, or roof box or combination. We have a long thin box which should allow 2 bikes with it, but with a lot of faffing about DH has rigged it so that 4 bikes + box go to France every year! (We get lots of craned necks at Ferry Port with "How did they do that?" looks).

The Thule racks are very good and bikes are securely held.
