For those who got first or second generation e-readers what do you think you'll go for if/when you replace your current e-reader?

I've got a Sony PRS-600 which I love, OH has a Kindle so I've seen both in action as it were. I have to say that if the e-ink on the new Sony's were to match that of the Kindle I'd probably stick with Sony.

Reasons include:

  • I don't need a keyboard and it would just annoy me
  • Sony interface seems more intuitive in terms of buttons/touch screen etc (although I wish they'd sort out the eLibrary software)
  • I like being able to use the library to borrow books
  • the look and feel of the Sony's feels nicer to me
  • I don't care about 3G/WiFi - with 100s of books on there the chances of me ever needing a book on the move are pretty slim

I have a Sony PRS 505 which I got almost two years ago. I am very tempted to get a new Kindle and pass this one on to my kid as he is always borrowing it. I don't really need another one though and as I will be getting an Ipad soon I might wait for a while. I have downloaded loads of books and use Calibre to convert formats so can read them anywhere, so I don't think you need a new ebook for that reason. My mum got a Kindle, I like the way the books are delivered although I would be concerned that Amazon could delete files (I think they did that with a George Orwell book?)

That's weird I send my mum emails with converted files all the time and they have always worked so far on both ebooks.

Well - as a surprise DH came home last night with the PRS-650 for me (someone at work had ordered one and then received one as a gift so they were selling it cheap, totally brand new!). I love it, love it, love it!

It has the same screen quality as DH's Kindle, they've improved the user interface (better menus), the touch screen actually works now to flip the pages etc, you can build collections on the reader itself too which is fun. Switching over was a breeze - I just plugged the new one into the PC and the Reader Library recognised it, I dragged over the books I wanted and done, no registering, formatting, updating - all dead easy.
