Wooden toddler table and chairs

Hi

After advice please. I am after getting a small table and 2 chairs for my ds. He will mostly use it alone but I think maybe his 2 friends will come round and they can eat their dinner from it.

I am thinking about the John Lewis set for £85 (because you can always rely on JL ...) Has anyone researched these lately and found anything better / different? The Ikea ones look a bit basic for my living room I think ...

Thanks in advance

We had the Svala Ikea ones - they can be painted/varnished and have stood up to a lot of bashing and man-handling by our two.

£85 sounds like an awful lot to be forking out on a table for children

Thanks ijafw. I agree but want something that's half decent quality. I am nowhere near an iea but have seen them on ebay (or maybe can manage a trip to one to buy lots of other unnecessary things :)

Agree with ijafw. We have Svala ones which have also stood up to plenty of bashing and dragging around the house and me standing on the chairs to reach things on high shelves! I think the quality is impressive but they do look basic if not varnished or decorated. We painted ours and put beading round the edge of the table to stop crayons rolling off all the time.

Thanks SweetApril. I think that is the key - to paint it! OK, novice here - how would I paint it? Would I need to use primer or just slap one coat on? Blush

I third the IKEA ones. I was only thinking the other day that it has been one of our best buys - we have had it for about four years and it (and the two chairs that came with it) is still going strong. We have covered it with one of those wipe-clean table cloths, we bought one for own own table and just ordered slightly more material than we needed and cut a piece of for the smaller table. We also bought cushions from IKEA that tie onto the chairs.

You might find the table cloth better than painting the table as it will probably be used for everything from eating through painting to play dough.

We have the IKEA dark wood one. It is now into its 5th year of use and going strong.

Yay for Ikea! Thanks all ...

Is this the one you mean ?

I agree, that's a lot of money for a kids table and chairs. We have a different Ikea one ( kritter set in white ) but have a look at the Leksvik set too

MyMamaToldMe · 15/02/2011 15:04

We have the Kritter set too, and personally I think they look nicer that the JL set linked above (and so much cheaper!)

SweetApril · 16/02/2011 20:48

Sorry, ilovefred, only just seen your post. Such a shame the chairs are out of stock. I hope they come back in soon. May be some on ebay but the news ones are usually quite a bit more pricey than the actual store. You might be lucky with secondhand as you could still paint them up if in good nick. We stuck the beading on first then used wood primer and then painted it. Good luck anyway. Hope you find something you like.

I would go for the Ikea Leksvig as it's 78cm long. You'd be suprised at how much that extra 18cm makes!
It looks nice in RL too.

2xchairs+table still = £60 but at least you can buy extra chairs for other little friends.

ilovefred · 18/02/2011 16:03

Thanks all. OK decided on ikea and definately want the bigger size as there will be 3 of them some days. Will look at the Leksvig.

We Purchasesd the Teamson magic garden Children's Table And Chair Set for Amelia this christmas from children's table and chair sets it's hand painted and hand carved expensive but great quality we are sure it will last for years, it was a difficult choice when you can get kids sets but I am sure this will last and hopefully have some resale value at the end.
