Estate or something smaller?

We are in the market for a car, and thinking we ought to get something with more room than our tiny Corsa. The kids are 6 and 4 now so we need room for their legs as much as anything else, and although the pushchair is gradually getting less use there seems to be quite a lot of other clobber taking its place on days out.

So...tall husband, tall son, fair amount of kit...do we need an estate or is there something between that an a Corsa that would do us?

Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Have you considered a hatchback?
or something alongside Skoda Yeti

We've just bought a Renault Megane Estate. Huge boot and loads of leg room in front and back. Road tax is £30 a year and it also does 65mpg (diesel), which is great considering the coast of fuel these days. It's a "59" plate, 1.5l diesel.

I have an estate, my kids are almost 5 and almost 3. We don't have pushchairs but still find the boot extremely useful. I think baby kit ends up being replaced by sports kit and a friend in the car with kit etc. When my estate claps out, I will get another estate.
