M&S Meatballs

I bought a tin of M&S meatballs last week on opening them yesterday I found their was not one meatball in the tin only a tin of tomatoe sauce, as I travel over 3 miles to the local M&S store ( and 3 miles back ) I decided to return the time today.
On explaining to the shop assistant why I was returning this item she looked at me as if I was stupid for even bringing them back to the shop and then told me she would give me back my money and handed me £1.80.
My question is this " what would you have expected " a new tin of meatballs? money back ? or more ?

If I could have been bothered to take them back in (which I probably wouldn't have been) I would have expected my money back.

I wouldnt have taken them back, I would have emailed a complaint and expected at least a fiver voucher in the post.

Can you tell Ive done this before? (not with M&S meatballs though)

I once phoned up about some sauce that was out of date. The manager offered to taxi some over for me (about 12 miles!) - I declined (it seemed ridiculous for a pack of watercress sauce) but they got a goody pack ready for me on my next visit. Also got money back and £5 voucher. That's customer service!
I always phone up and speak very nicely to a manager or similar. Seems to work.
