Advice on portable sat navs?

I would like to get my dh a sat nav for his car, but also that can be used in my car from time to time. We dont travel abroad much, so mostly for Ireland, Northern Ireland, and England and France. I have been told the Tom Tom is good, but someone said that the Navman is better if you only want it for Irl and UK, as Tom Tom not good with the minor roads.

I have NO idea what to go for, can any of you recommend??

I had a tomtom and it was fine. unfortunately I left it on show in my car and it was nicked overnight, so I bought myself a garmin, with lane advice ( brilliant) traffic alerts (rubbish) but overall the routes are not the shortest or fastest, especially not driving in London (I don't know about anywhere else). someone else told me later the had a garmin and they weren't impressed either.

never tried Navman, but get tomtom in preference to garmin anyday.
