Ok i know it's been done but it's friday and i'm tired so i can't be arsed to search.

If we can manage to get credit for a new car, i wanna make sure we choose the right one.

Budget i think is gonna be about £4000 judging on monthly repayments.

I like Citroen Xara Picasso and have found one we could afford, anyone got any opinions on those ??

you can squeeze three across the back of a renault scenic as well. What car do really good, realistic car reviews on picasos etc. the fiat multipa is dead cheap and you can fit three across that as well - depends on the seat. there is not much give in any of the smaller mpv. if you can get something like a seat alhambra second hand - its a bit bigger than the picasso but have seen three stage 2 (4+ car seats in one. We have three car (3 under 3yrs)seats and found that there was not enough pushchair space - always carry a twin buggy, a single buggy, a buggy board and a seat-to-go in our car and none of the smaller mpvs could cope with that and a full shop. we looked at the xsara and compared it with zafira, zafira won hands down much more functional if you have three carseats.

misdee · 23/09/2005 20:34

old style scenic, you can get some for under 3k. hth!!

NannyL · 24/09/2005 00:01

Ok i can garantee the renault clio does NOT.... spent ages in motehrcare just 2 weekedns ago trying a million combinations and could NOT get 3 in the back...

you can rule that one out for sure!

Have a picasso and you can get three high backed boosters in the back - just not very easy managing the buckles but possible. Also, the air bag can be deactivated if you need to sit one in the front. Boot is good sized and individual rear seats can be removed if required.

Fair fuel economy (mine is a 1.6 and does 46.3mpg on average), have not had to have anything done on it - only got early this year and they serviced it and MOT'd it then (although only needed MOT last month I did not want the expensive of it) so don't know how expensive those things are.

You could probably pick up a Picasso for about £4000 depending on how old a car you were looking for - spotted on Y plate on ebay at 3,600 with only 37,500 on the clock. Go to a showroom a test drive a couple of difference cars, because some people don't like the Picasso because you step up into it - I love the high driving position. Actually I just love the car, it is my fourth car and just wish that I could have afforded new so that I would not have to look at changing as quickly (in three to four years time!!)

BlondeinLondon · 25/09/2005 08:22

I think you can probably get three in the back of the peugeot 307SW

helsi · 25/09/2005 08:30

Fiat Idea

jamboure · 25/09/2005 08:37

nutty

we have a mondeo fit big carseats for the twins and a booster seat for ds1.

They all look quite comfy and dont complain

Frizbe · 25/09/2005 09:10

Ah good thread ladies, I need one that does 3 across the back too soon, what with bump on the way, and ss having to go back into a car seat with the new laws....

RosiePosie · 25/09/2005 09:13

I test drove a Picasso yesterday and I loved it! We ordered a new one there and then. They're under £10,000 new at the moment.

RosiePosie · 25/09/2005 09:14

What are the new laws, Frizbe?

vickiyumyum · 25/09/2005 09:17

we have a 54 reg focus (old shape) and you can just fit three car seats in the back. we have one high backed booster, one booster and one baby car seat to fit in a few months time.

i saw a 03 focus (same shape) parked at my surgery that had three 9month-4years car seats in the back, they looked like britax freeways or excels so quite narrow.

Enid · 25/09/2005 09:18

booster seats compulsory until 11 from May 2006

NannyL · 25/09/2005 09:53

I was under the impression that the exact law that comes into place on 6 may 2006 is
"children under 10 years and under 135cm high must travel on an approved car restraint. Therefor a 2 year old MUST be in a proper seat for a 2 year old, NOT a booster etc!

The guidlines say: up too 11 years OR 150cm OR 36 kg, but for the sake of the law i think they are 'cutting it off' a bit earlier, otherwise you get the 130 month old, 149cm child breaking the law by NOT sitting on a booster! Obvioulsy its driver breaking the law NOt the child!)

Applies to most vehicals in the same way as now, so i assume exempt in taxis etc

misdee · 25/09/2005 10:07

NannyL, at 2years old my 2yr old was in a high back booster as she exceeded the weigh limit for seats for her age group.

seems her weight has tailed off a bit, as i can now pop her in a 2nd stage setaagain. she was a chunky little thing.

Gobbledigook · 25/09/2005 10:11

We've got 2 9m-4yr seats (Britax Eclipse) and one high backed booster (Britax Highliner) in the back of our mondeo. Huge boot on a mondeo too and nice to drive.

misdee · 25/09/2005 10:12

there is a car seat which can be different widths, its a 2nd stage one. hold on, i'l lcheck what it is, tho dont know if it can be fitted with a lap belt only.

misdee · 25/09/2005 10:14

here?

LIZS · 25/09/2005 10:14

Here are the proposed revisions in outline. The red link on that page takes you to the consultation paper but it is rather heavy going.

3mummy · 26/09/2005 17:57

I have a peugeot 307sw, and fit my 3 DDs across the backseat. 6yo is on a britax booster seat, 4.5yo is britax booster carseat (full seat but only uses the car seatbelt, so kinda like a booster cushion but with full back support) and 6mth old is in britax rockatot delux.

Peugeot do some great finance deals, we paid a % up front and the rest on a 0% interset over 4yrs. The car is great to drive too.

alison222 · 26/09/2005 18:01

I have a mazda premacy. It fits 2 big car seats and a high backed booster across the back. Bit of a squeeze to do the belt up on the booster but ok when they are all strapped in

Acres of boot space too
