Maybe a Garmin Nuvi 1240? For £80 you get UK and Europe mapping and a free update to the latest maps. It's pretty easy to use. The speed limits database is a bit out of date, but that doesn't matter much to me.

It doesn't have a wide screen, lane selection assistance or traffic warnings, but for that price you wouldn't expect it to. It's a small device, so it's easily carried and it has a pedestrian mode.

You can look up hotels, places of interest, etc. as well as looking up street addresses postcodes or coordinates.

I reckon it's pretty good for a first satnav.

Just bought DH a Garmin 1690 and he loves it! £161 on Amazon. Garmin has walked off with most of the Which best buys.

The 1690 gives the European Maps and the live traffic updates, and which after the first year, costs £70 per year, but that gives new maps as well. His previous system without the traffic alerts cost £50.
