Is it worth buying Leapad for nearly 8yr olds?

Hi, my trio wil be 8 in Jan, one of them struggles at school although not so much with his reading than his handwriting, I think they would all enjoy it but there doesn`t seem to be many books suitable, they are all very young and themed, I have seen one on geography, but little else like that. Is there an alternative to Leapad?
